Project MERCY, originally named Project EDEN, began in 1995 on a compound near the towns of Black Diamond and Ravensdale in the greater Seattle area. Headed by Dr. Julia Sinclair and Dr. Ewen Morris of the CIA, the Project was started with the intent of programming the human mind in ways that would benefit the government in information warfare and finding ways of controlling the mind through dream-sharing technology. The project’s origins were very much inspired by that of Project MKULTRA, started in the early 1950s, in order to find “truth-serums” and program humans as hypnotic couriers among other things.
The Project started out with a score of patients, varying in age, gender and nationality. The intent of having patients of varying origins and personalities was to find that which would be most susceptible to mind alteration. The Project’s staff were especially keen on finding those who had a particular talent, such as highly skilled Extractors, Architects or Forgers, both non-professional and otherwise.
Soon, the Project grew and with it came more goals and patients who would be used to reach said goals. One goal in particular came the idea of Imprinting, much like Inception, Imprinting was the idea that one might be able leave behind an impression of their own sub-conscious on the Dreamer, thus altering their personality, beliefs and other such things. Though this method is rarely used as it is very unpredictable and difficult to use in the sense that one may leave the wrong impression, which can be very disastrous in some cases.
Pair of patients would be teamed up with each other and would share dreams trying to make imprints upon each other. These dreams were more often than not monitored by any of the doctors and assistants present at the time. Though there were a few times in which the partners were left unsupervised to construct a more “normal” dreaming environment in hopes it would up the chances of an Imprinting to happen.
This soon became one of many ideas and theories tested, in the project, which was growing ever more larger as it gained the attention of several well known Universities and Hospitals, which volunteered staff and facilities and other such resources to the Project.
However, as the Project grew larger, so did the recklessness. The abusing of patients, (which had been taking place throughout the history of project, right to the very beginning) was becoming more and more and the staff was less careful and watchful around them.
A patient named Dieter Coen (who’d been in the project for a great while and had earned a reputation for his talents but also for his extremely abnormal Projections and Dreamscapes as well as his several mental disorders) had begun telling other patients in secret, while in dreams and out, to rebel against the staff and find a way of escaping.
A handful of patients then followed his instruction and made a plan of escape. This was successful though not without cost, one of patients was killed during the escape as well as a few staff members.
After this, in fear of being exposed in their illegal conduct as most of these patients were not willing and were indeed in direct violation of the Nuremburg Code, the CIA shut down Project MERCY and destroyed all evidence it existed, including the patients. All that remains of it now is an abandoned complex and those few escapees who made it out alive.
